(Patricia Cornwell was born in 1956. She is a crime fiction writer widely known for the series featuring Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a medical examiner. She had a difficult relationship with her late father and that comes across in her work where the protagonist has a strained relationship with her father as well. Body of Evidence was published in 1991 and there are about 16 more books in the series the last one being ‘The Scarpetta Factor’ which was recently released.)

The book begins with the murder of a writer named Beryl Madison. She is stalked, threatened and eventually murdered. Kay Scarpetta is called to the crime scene and she begins investigating. As more people connected with Beryl get murdered or commit suicide the investigation takes complicated and bizarre turns. And to add to it, the latest manuscript of the writer goes missing from the crime scene. The story gets intense as it progresses and your mind runs in various directions at the same time.

The book lacks the thrill that you find in Mooney’s or Patterson’s books and is basically a murder investigation in progress but it has a wonderful plot.

It’s Nancy Drew for those adults who loved it in their teens. It’s my Nancy Drew in my early 20′s.

(Chris Mooney is an author of thriller novels. ‘Remembering Sarah’ was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Novel. The Dead Moon is the third of the CSI Darby McCormick series. Mooney lives in Boston with his wife and son.)

I had read ‘The Missing’ by the same author a year back and had thought it was the most chilling thriller novel. So naturally when I saw ‘The Dead Room’ in my favorite bookshop I didn’t even read the back cover like I normally do while buying books and bought it immediately. I came home very excited and started reading even though I had exams coming up. The book started off slow and I was a little bit disappointed considering I was hoping it would be as good as the previous book if not more. But it picked up pace and got even bigger and better than the previous one.

Darby McCormick is called to a crime scene where a mother has been viciously murdered and her 12 year old son is rushed to the hospital. As she digs deeper, more horrors come to light. Her prime suspect is a serial killer of massive scale with connections to the FBI. Darby finds out that the murders have a past that many people want to keep buried at any cost.

The twists in the book are just amazing and you won’t be able to guess the ending. This book gave me shivers at night. I couldn’t turn off the lights.

What I call fantastic writing. Mooney outdoes himself.

Lindsay Boxer is recovering from the loss of her partner, Chris when she is called upon to investigate the death of an 11 year old girl. As murders continue to happen, she discovers that all the victims have one thing in common. They are all related to police officers. A gang called Chimera falls under suspicion and Lindsay and her friends investigate.

This book has a lot of parallel stories. Jill is pregnant. Lindsay’s father shows up at her doorstep after years. Cindy dates a the murdered girl’s pastor. With all these stories, it never gets boring.

(The 5th Horseman is the fifth book in the Women’s Murder Club series featuring Lindsay Boxer by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro first published on February 2006.)

Suspense and thrill runs deep in the book. It starts with a young mother who is recuperating at the hospital when suddenly she has difficulty breathing. The call button doesn’t work and she ends up dead. But this case is not the first for the hospital where even a kid with a broken arm under observation overnight dies. When Yuki Castellano’s mother Keiko dies under similar circumstances, the Women’s Murder Club believes that something sinister is operating at the hospital and Lindsay starts investigating. It turns out that all the deceased were admitted in the emergency wing under Dr. Dennis Garza who becomes the prime suspect in the investigation and also the dead were found with buttons on their closed eyelids. Is it a coincidence or is a murderer on the loose at a place where lives are to be saved?

The hospital is determined to save its reputation at any cost and calls the deaths mere mistakes that sometimes happen. Lindsay and her friends work against the odds to find out the truth and thus begins a very chilling investigation.

Just when I begin to think Patterson couldn’t get any better, he proves me wrong. Fantastic. I am on a thriller roll now. Can’t stop reading Patterson.

(The 6th Target is the sixth book in the Women’s Murder Club series featuring Lindsay Boxer by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro.)

Fantastic. Absolutely Brilliant. The best James Patterson book I’ve read so far because though the story is obvious, the twists and turns make it a very thrilling read. I felt like I was reading 3 books at once.

A Ferry shooting leaves one of the members of the Women’s Murder Club struggling for her life. And the rest fight to bring the killer to justice and put him behind bars before he hurts more people. But it’s not as simple as it seems. The killer surrenders and confesses to the horrendous crime but claims that he hears a voice in his head which commands him to kill people. At the same time, children and their nannies are being kidnapped but no ransom demand is being made. As children continue to disappear, Lindsay and the Women’s Murder Club race against time to save them.

It’s a chilling read with plots so gripping that you’ll want to wake up in the middle of the night and continue reading.

(Pearl Cleage is an African-American poet, essayist and journalist living in Atlanta, Georgia. She is also a women rights activist. What Looks Like Crazy is her first novel and it was published in 1997. It is also an Oprah Book Club selection.)

What Looks Like Crazy is a story about a woman named Ava Johnson who moves to her hometown Idlewind from Atlanta after being diagnosed with HIV. There she lives with her elder sister Joyce whose husband Mitch had died in an accident a few years ago. Joyce is involved in a youth program in her church which educates black woman about safe sex, combating domestic violence and gives them an opportunity to come together and share their worries in a group of similar people. She meets some resistance from the church authorities who believe that abstinence is the only way to avoid diseases such as AIDS. But she continues to help young black woman in any way she can. When a young drug addict gives birth to a baby girl and leaves her at the hospital, Joyce takes custody of the child and cares for her. Having lost two of her own children, she cares for the baby who she names Imani as if she were her own. The story is about issues like HIV, drug addiction and domestic violence especially prevalent in the black community. Amongst it all, Ava falls in love with a man named Eddie who has a past of his own. Two people coming together like that is perhaps the most beautiful aspect of the story showing that hope and love conquers all.

The book will never bore you. Not even in bits. Ava’s monologues are funny and full of hard earned wisdom.

(Sophie Kinsella is also known as Madeleine Sophie Wickham. She is best known for her Shopaholic novels series. The first book of the series has been adapted into a film.)

Remember Me? is the story of a woman named Lexi Smart who wakes up one day at a hospital after a car crash thinking she is 25 years old with crooked teeth but infact she is 28 and has perfect teeth. She suffers from amnesia and has no memory of the past 3 years of her life. The last thing she remembers is going to a bar with her friends and that was in 2004 but apparently it’s already 2007.

She has a big house, drives a fancy car, has a handsome husband and is the boss of her department at work. But she has no recollection of how she got there. She apparently had an affair with a man named Jon but she remembers none of it. Her friends hate her and a rival is after her job. Life is not that perfect and more so when she doesn’t know why and how things are the way they appear to be.

It’s a hilarious story about a woman who has what seems like a perfect life but has no memory of having acquired it. It’s a simple story told is the most hilarious manner. The monologues are just brilliant. It’s a book that will make you laugh and cheer you up instantly.

(Breaking Dawn is the fourth and final book in the Twilight series. The cover is a metaphor for Bella’s progression throughout the entire series; she began as the physically weakest player on the board, the pawn, but at the end she becomes the strongest, the queen.)

Breaking Dawn is divided into three parts. The first and third is from Bella’s perspective while the second is from Jacob’s viewpoint.

The first part takes you through Edward and Bella’s marriage and honeymoon. Bella becomes pregnant and the fetus starts growing at an alarming rate. Bella starts become weaker and weaker as her pregnancy progresses but she refuses to get rid of the fetus even though it’s killing her. Bella is all about love. Love for Edward, love for the child that’s growing inside her and love for life. She believes that she will live through something that all others are sure will kill her.

The second part is Jacob’s viewpoint during Bella’s pregnancy and childbirth. A softer and more mature Jacob can be seen as compared to the other books in the series. Jacob shows what being a friend is all about and how you just have to stand by your friends even if the circumstances go against your wishes.

The third part is Bella again. But after she becomes a vampire herself. It’s about her struggle to come in terms with something she always wanted but now fears. It’s about her struggle to remain herself despite the odds and it’s about her love for her family that gives her strength to hope and believe even at the most trying times. It’s about a mothers love; how a mother will always put her child first. It’s about everything and more.

It’s one big book but I was extremely sad when it came to an end. I had an urge to go back to the first chapter and begin all over again.

(Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer is the third book in the Twilight series. It replaced ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ on the top of bestsellers list around the globe including the New York Times. A film adaptation of the book is scheduled to release in mid 2010.)

The third installment of the Twilight series continues to tell the love story of Bella and Edward. It opens in Seattle which is being rampaged by strange murders. The Cullens think that it is the work of a newborn vampire. Meanwhile in Forks, Bella struggles to maintain a balance between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob. It is one of the most contradictory book. You are forced to change your mind about the characters from one moment to the next especially Bella and Jacob. You can’t help liking them at one point and then going totally against them the next. It worked for me though because I like a book which makes you change your mind and keep it running in different directions all at once.
